AbstractIn object oriented software, some concerns cannot be cleanly captured within a separate program entity - i.e. a class. These concerns are typically called crosscutting and the paradigm of aspect oriented software development proposes to place these concerns in a new entity called an aspect. This thesis describes an experiment on JHotDraw wherein the effectiveness of object oriented refactorings are compared to aspect oriented ones, using aspect mining tools as arbitrators. Our results show that some crosscutting concerns cannot be efficiently refactored in an object oriented way and therefore should be refactored using aspect orientation.
